Draw Something!

When you're too lazy to text, now there's "Draw Something."

The app Draw Something has recently become popular in the Apple and Android worlds. This is app is a Pictionary-like game, where you and your opponent try and guess what the other has drawn, earning coins for the difficulty. How did this app come to rise? For most apps in the top 100, there has been a lot of press on how the new app is “terrific” or “amazing,” but Draw Something has had no press or anything of that matter. Google News shows that the app had 1 million downloads before it had a single search result.

The press is often the best way to get an app to somewhat “stand alone” against the other competing apps on the market. Draw Something, number one on the Apple App Store, despite being just four weeks old has about 6 million downloads and users are creating about 1,000 drawings a second. OMGPOP, a company who develops apps including Draw Something, says that it brings in more revenue in one day than the rest of OMGPOP’s developments do in a month.

This app is another way to interact on your cell phone with your friends. For those on and Android or Apple device, this is a highly recommended app.

Ode to CFS

Most seniors around this time of year can’t wait to graduate and forget about everything that has to do with high school. To me there are many things that I will miss; including the students and teachers. The thing that I will miss most of all will be the Country Fried Steak. Prepared and cooked by the sweet ladies in the cafeteria, this meal is something I look forward to every other Wednesday. On CFS Wednesday, when my lunch shift is approaching, mouth is watering and ready to dig into this deliciousness topped with a perfect flood of white gravy. YUM!

The lunches haven’t always been what they are today; freshman year to senior year the quality of the lunch has been a complete turnaround. Freshman year I can remember barely getting one full scoop of popcorn chicken, now where it’s always full. The menu choices have also undergone a change. Like the Stuffed Breadsticks, making their debut junior year giving the taste buds a little interest. Or the Chicken Parmesan also “introduced junior year with its deliciousness”. While some have been introduced, others have been taken away. The ice cream was introduced and a month later taken away. Junior year the coffee was introduced and nixed just before the year ended.

One way to ensure your survival of the school lunches, for those who like or dislike them, is to get to know the ladies who take their time to make the food for you. In 8th grade my friends and I got to know a lady of the name Del Johnson, the sweetest lunch lady at OMS. We always said “please and thank you,” and she would reply with “you’re welcome.” After while we got to know each other, she would give us things on holidays, like Halloween she gave us each our own box of bottle caps, and she will always be remembered by us. Here at OHS there’s a great crew of ladies. Two of them we have gotten to know over the past two years, Sharon and Kay, who run the registers during the lunch shifts. Though many of us think working in a cafeteria doesn’t sound fun, all of the ladies always have a smile on their face and seem to enjoy being around us.

While people are going to be excited about graduating and getting out of high school, including me, I will definitely miss the times in the cafeteria. The Country Fried Steak and the cafeteria will always be remembered forever. At UK next year, they better not forget the gravy! So for the underclassmen enjoy the lunches even though you may not like them and remember to say, “thank you,” it can a long way.

Strange but True: Crazy Laws

Tourism is a major part of how people entertain themselves today. For those who want to travel, study abroad during college, or cross off places on their bucket list, it might be advisable to to check the laws in the country that they are planning on venturing to. Some countries have ridiculous and outrageous laws that could get you fined or arrested. Obviously, these are old and out-of-date, but the fact they haven’t been made null and void leaves us with lots to laugh at. Still, a law is a law…..

  1. Australia – It is illegal to roam the streets wearing black clothes, felt shoes and black shoe polish on your face as these items are the tools of a cat burglar. I think everyone is safe to wear black as long as you don’t have shoe polish on your face by accident.
  2. France – Between the hours of 8AM and 8PM, 70% of the music in the radio must be by French composers.
  3. Thailand – It is illegal to leave your house if you are not wearing underwear.
  4. Italy – It is an offense for women of ‘ill repute or evil looks’ to enter a cheese factory in the area of Ferrara.
  5. Scotland – It is illegal to be a drunk while in possession of a cow.
  6. France – It is illegal in Antibes to take photos of police officers or police vehicles, even if they are just in the background. (I hope the photo at right isn’t from Antibes!)
  7. Lebanon – Men are legally allowed to have sex with animals so long as the animals are female. It is illegal to have sex with a male animal.
  8. China – Women are prohibited from walking around a hotel room in the nude. A woman may only be naked whilst in the bathroom.
  9. Hong Kong – A woman is legally allowed to kill her cheating husband, only if she uses her bare hands. The husband’s lover however may be killed in any manner desired. For those paranoid girlfriends who think their significant other is cheating just take him to Hong Kong.
  10. Switzerland – A man may not relieve himself while standing up, after 10 P.M.
  11. Cambodia – Water guns may not be used in New Year’s celebrations.

A Rekindled Spirit

Over the past few years at Owensboro High School our school spirit was at an absolute low. It was an embarrassment to our school for other teams’ fans to come into our home games and have more spirit than we do. This year has been a complete turn around. Lead by Seniors Zac Bodenheimer and Alex Priar recently games have been rejuvenated with high energy and spirit. Bodenheimer says, “It’s something we wanted to bring back to OHS, especially after we see other schools do it, we want to be together and make games fun for everyone,” when asked what pushed him to attempt this task.

Tuesday night, when the boy’s basketball team faced off against Daviess County, the student section was filled with students standing for the entire game. The chanting, the booing, and the craziness were an enjoyable experience for the students, players, and other fans in attendance. This “new” and revitalized school spirit is a key factor in winning and losing, which Tuesday night helped boost the Devils to beat big-time rivals Daviess County. At the end buzzer, the student section cleared and stormed the court, showing their approval and spirit for the team.

Friday night’s double-header is against Apollo, and is hopefully filled with even more spirit than Tuesday. People who are attending the games Friday, Bodenheimer says, “Friday will be a WHITE-OUT, and be in the student section 30 minutes before the boy’s game. Also dress crazy!” A word of advice to those who want to dress up and go crazy; forget what others are going to say to you or about you, and instead go out there, go ballistic, and have fun with all the other students because you’re not the only one doing it. This is a way to enjoy high school, so don’t be the one who looks back and regrets not doing something. So Friday night, be prepared to show support for your school and teams as they take on the Eagles. Have a blast and enjoy going wild with the rest of your peers, forgetting what others may think.  So remember to have fun, but listen to the administrators and in the words of Ron Burgundy, “’stay classy’ Owensboro High School.”

DASHing Through the Snow

Looking for a great Christmas gift for one of your family members? Here is an inexpensive but amazing gift that would be perfect for them. The Sony Dash is an alarm clock but has the features of a tablet. The Dash is an information alarm clock that stands on its own with a seven inch LCD touchscreen. Thought to be a tablet when it was first unveiled, this Sony invention only uses some tablet features.

One of the many features of the Dash is the main act of being an alarm clock, you can set a daily alarm and one-time only alarms with Internet radio waking you up or reminding you. Sony has one thousand plus free apps that are all compatible with the Dash and can be downloaded from it or on the Dash website. A great feature of the Dash is the USB port that allows owners to put videos, pictures, and music from their cameras or phones. The Dash even includes Netflix and YouTube apps that enable you to watch full-length movies, TV episodes, and videos. The Dash uses your home connection Wi-Fi and refreshes up to the minute with news, sports scores, and social networking apps on screen.

Many would figure the cost of such a gadget to be up with the iPad, lin the ranges of $400-$500 but this Sony invention is only $150 off of the Sony website and can be found cheaper for a refurbished one. If you’re looking for a cheap tablet for the family then the Sony Dash is what some of you may want to look into.

Lucky Number 903

Tuesday night in NCAA Men’s College Basketball, the Duke Blue Devils head coach Mike Krzyzewski became the winningest coach with 903 career wins.  It was meant to happen as the win came in the historical Madison Square Garden in New York City. The Blue Devils defeated the Michigan State Spartans 74-69. Coach K passed his former coach and mentor Bob Knight who was in attendance. After the game Coach K went over and hugged Knight as the student surpassed the teacher. Krzyzewski played point guard for Knight at the United States Military Academy at West Point. From then on the two have had a close relationship.

Coach K began his career as the head coach at Army from 1975-1980 then in 1980 was given the head coaching position at Duke. Although he has the most career wins for a coach, his first few years were losing seasons. Duke let him keep the job and when the players developed into his style of play winning was seen from then on. He has a number of accomplishments such as 27 NCAA Tournament berths over the past 28 years with 16 consecutive appearances from 1996-2011. He has been coaching Duke for 31 seasons leading his teams to 13 ACC Championships, 11 Final Fours, and won 4 NCAA Championships. With success comes opportunity, and Coach K was given the opportunity to coach the USA Men’s National team in 2006 leading them to the 2008 Summer Olympics Gold Medal and the 2010 FIBA World Championship Gold Medal.  To add to the honors Krzyzewski  was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001 and inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.

Mike Krzyzewski has had an illustrious career that is far from over. Tuesday night marked him as one of the best to have ever coached. When asked where he would put the record-breaking ball Coach K said, “In the Duke Hall of Fame, where it should be.” His wins are still counting and will be the hardest record to break.
