Most seniors around this time of year can’t wait to graduate and forget about everything that has to do with high school. To me there are many things that I will miss; including the students and teachers. The thing that I will miss most of all will be the Country Fried Steak. Prepared and cooked by the sweet ladies in the cafeteria, this meal is something I look forward to every other Wednesday. On CFS Wednesday, when my lunch shift is approaching, mouth is watering and ready to dig into this deliciousness topped with a perfect flood of white gravy. YUM!
The lunches haven’t always been what they are today; freshman year to senior year the quality of the lunch has been a complete turnaround. Freshman year I can remember barely getting one full scoop of popcorn chicken, now where it’s always full. The menu choices have also undergone a change. Like the Stuffed Breadsticks, making their debut junior year giving the taste buds a little interest. Or the Chicken Parmesan also “introduced junior year with its deliciousness”. While some have been introduced, others have been taken away. The ice cream was introduced and a month later taken away. Junior year the coffee was introduced and nixed just before the year ended.
One way to ensure your survival of the school lunches, for those who like or dislike them, is to get to know the ladies who take their time to make the food for you. In 8th grade my friends and I got to know a lady of the name Del Johnson, the sweetest lunch lady at OMS. We always said “please and thank you,” and she would reply with “you’re welcome.” After while we got to know each other, she would give us things on holidays, like Halloween she gave us each our own box of bottle caps, and she will always be remembered by us. Here at OHS there’s a great crew of ladies. Two of them we have gotten to know over the past two years, Sharon and Kay, who run the registers during the lunch shifts. Though many of us think working in a cafeteria doesn’t sound fun, all of the ladies always have a smile on their face and seem to enjoy being around us.
While people are going to be excited about graduating and getting out of high school, including me, I will definitely miss the times in the cafeteria. The Country Fried Steak and the cafeteria will always be remembered forever. At UK next year, they better not forget the gravy! So for the underclassmen enjoy the lunches even though you may not like them and remember to say, “thank you,” it can a long way.
