On Sunday, the OHS Lady Red Devils Basketball team achieved something that hasn’t been done in over 30 years, securing the Third Region Championship with a 61-54 victory over Owensboro Catholic at the Sports Center. With the win, the Lady Devils will be headed to Rupp Arena to compete in the KHSAA Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 1992.

Owensboro Catholic jumped out to a two-point lead in the first quarter, but it was all Lady Red Devils after that. Owensboro outscored the Lady Aces by nine over the final three frames, knocking down several clutch free throws in the final minutes to bring home the big trophy and punch their ticket to Lexington.

Heleina John and Unique Carter-Swanagan led a balanced scoring attack for OHS, tallying 16 points apiece. Senior guard A’Lyrica Hughes added 11 points in the game.

After the game, John was named the 102.7 The Game Tournament MVP. The junior forward averaged 12 points and five rebounds for the tournament, including 16 points in both the semifinals and finals.

The Lady Devils are in for a rematch up in Lexington as they will take on their longtime rivals, the Henderson County Lady Colonels of Region 2. Henderson beat Owensboro 56-48 back on January 27, but it is worth noting that OHS was playing without its star senior guard Hughes, who was out due to an injury in the loss.

Tip-off for the first round game is slated for 12:30 PM CT this Thursday, March 14 at Rupp Arena. We want to both congratulate and wish the girls luck as they head off to Lexington!
