Troye Sivan debuted his sophomore album, Bloom, on August 31st, 2018.

As a casual listener of Sivan’s music, I decided to give it a listen, and I am so glad I did.

Sivan took a change in pace from his typical sound and brought back pop in a way that was wondrous. The album itself is a brisk 37 minutes, but is jam-packed with collective sounds ranging from somber hangouts to jump out your chair ecstatic.

The 23-year-old star has done his research, and managed to make his writing tighter and lyrics lighter than ever before.

In songs, such as “The Good Side”, Sivan manages to make a melody of melancholy the new “breakup song” for our generation, whereas “My My My!” captures a feeling of exuberance, making you want to jump out of your chair and belt every word.

On the negative side, Sivan holds a lot of character in his music; where he lacks vocally his personality will make up for. This shows a bit on the album with certain songs such as “Dance To This (feat. Ariana Grande).” The song is playful, but when combined with a voice as stentorian as Grande’s, it’s hard for Sivan to keep his voice from falling flat.

All in all, the album is high-spirited, exuberant, and shows a side of Sivan that’s more open and free than ever before. His personality molds the album, while the beats and lyrics shapes what he’s made of it. To listen and develop your own personal feel, click here.
