Kesha in rainbow dress

Kesha Sebert, famously known as Ke$ha, has made a triumphant comeback in the music industry after nearly a four year gap. Before her newly released album entitled Rainbow, Kesha hadn’t published any music since her collaboration with PitBull on the hit song, “Timber” in 2013.  The standstill , however, wasn’t the fault of Kesha directly, but an ongoing feud with her producer Lukasz Sebastian Gottwald, professionally known as as Dr. Luke.

It started in October 2014 , when Kesha sued her producer for sexual assault, battery, sexual harassment, gender violence, emotional abuse, and violation of California business practices. Kesha states in her testimony that Dr. Luke had drugged her and  had sexual contact with her ( with and without consent ) upon several occasions. She also claims that the eating disorder she was later institutionalized for was a direct result to Dr. Luke’s emotional abuse. Dr. Luke , however, filed a countersuit against Kesha, her mother, and management claiming that the accusations made were completely fabricated. Later in the year, he asked the judge to dismiss the case. On June 9, 2015 they changed the defense from attacking the producer to attacking the music company. Mark Geragos , Kesha’s attorney, explains the reasoning behind changing the subject of the case when stating that the Sony Music Company “turned a blind eye” to the abuse Kesha was enduring.

The counterclaims and countersuits continued for 3 very long years. However, Kesha’s fans, supporters, and fellow artists stood with her. Celebrities such as George Takei, Zedd, Taylor Swift, and Lady Gaga offered money, emotional support, and to even take on producing Kesha’s music if her contract with Dr. Luke was broken. Many other celebrities supported her through social media.

Kesha has lost every case she has filled for thus far, however, she is still fighting. She stated that she wanted to release music for her supporters and fans. Kesha finally released the single “Praying” on July 5, 2017 . Kesha stated in an essay she wrote for Lenny Letter, “ This song is about me finding peace in the fact that I can’t control everything — because trying to control everyone was killing me. It’s about learning to let go and realize that the universe is in control of my fate, not me.” The song was released on Dr. Luke’s record label “Kemosabe Records”. Her third album “Rainbow” Released August 7, 2017 also under Dr. Luke’s name. After all was said and done, Kesha stated, “this lawsuit [has been] so heavy on my once free spirit, I can only pray to one day feel that happiness again.”
