The Owensboro boys basketball team was placed first seed as they prepared for the first round of the District Tournament. On Tuesday, February 19th the Devils traveled to Apollo High School to battle the Eagles. Even though Owensboro had previously defeated the Eagles twice, the team was prepared for a good game.

In the first quarter, Apollo took the lead early as Owensboro had difficulty putting points on the board. The quarter ended 9-15 in Apollo’s favor. The Devils started out very slow, so they needed to increase their intensity for the rest of the game.

Owensboro made a slight comeback in the second quarter, scoring 13 points to Apollo’s 6. Owensboro led after the half: 22-21. The Devils definitely increased their scoring, but with a one-point lead, the game was uncomfortably close.

The third quarter was the highest scoring portion of the game. Owensboro managed to score 23 points compared to Apollo’s 11 points. There was plenty of consecutive scoring and aggressive play. The quarter ended 45-32, a decent lead for Owensboro, but not a confirmed victory.

Finally, Owensboro dominated the fourth quarter to ensure their victory. The game started to slow down as the deficit increased between the two teams. The final score of the game was 60-40.

Overall it was a very physical and intense game. Fouls increased throughout the game as two of Apollo’s players fouled out. Even though the Devils had a slow start, Owensboro’s high pressure later on was too much for Apollo to handle, leading the Devils to victory.

Senior Darrion Wimsatt led the game with 22 points, and Freshman Gavin Wimsatt had a total of 17 points by the end of the game. Gavin Wimsatt also led the team in rebounds with a total of 8.

The District Tournament continues on Friday, February 22nd at Apollo High School. Owensboro will play Owensboro Catholic for the District Championship. Regardless of the game’s outcome, both teams will advance to the Regional Tournament.
