The Owensboro Red Devils have secured the #1 seed in the district tournament with a huge win over Owensboro Catholic 69-61.

In the first quarter, the Red Devils jumped to a quick 18-10 lead in the first quarter. The Red Devils wanted to run and scorched the Aces on fast break points.

During the second quarter, the Devils played relaxed and allowed the Aces to storm back into play. The Aces outscored the Devils 15-13 in the 2nd quarter. After the first half, Owensboro led Owensboro Catholic 31-25.

If the Aces upsetted the Devils, then the number one seed would have been decided by a coin flip. Going into the half, the Devils knew they had to up the pressure. Coming out of the half, the Devils outscored the Aces 22-13 in the 3rd quarter. The Devils led 53-38 going into the fourth.

Again, the Devils allowed the Aces to storm back, outscoring the Devils 23-16 into the fourth quarter. The Aces effort was not enough. The final score was 69-61, and Owensboro secured their #1 seed and finished their undefeated district record.

Senior Darrion Wimsatt finished the game with 24 points. His brother, Freshman Gavin Wimsatt, scored 17 points. The duo was too much for the Aces – honestly, the whole third region. Junior Jaiden Greathouse’s emotion and 10 points accelerated the offense past the Aces.

The Devils battle the struggling Apollo Eagles in the first round of district play. The game is scheduled on February 19, 2019 at 7:00 PM.

After being asked what the team’s goal is for postseason play, Senior Darrion Wimsatt says “Our goal is to continue to play with the same intensity that we’ve been playing with, continue to play together as a unit like we have, and get to Lexington!”
