Owensboro Takes Home District Championship With Win Over Aces

The Owensboro Red Devils battled the Owensboro Catholic Aces at Apollo last Friday, February 22nd. Even though both teams will make the 3rd region tournament, the championship is crucial to having a good draw in the 3rd Region Tournament.
In the first quarter, the Devils accelerated to a quick lead. When things started to slow down, the play was balanced between both teams. Senior Darrion Wimsatt and Junior Isaac Humphrey had all 12 of the points. The score was 12-9 at the end of the quarter.
At the end of the half, the score was 27-16. Sophomore Amari Wales had the majority of the points. Using stellar defense, the Devils held the Aces to 7 points in the quarter. The Devils went into the half with momentum and carried it onto the third quarter.
In the third quarter, the Devils increased its lead to 15. Freshman Gavin Wimsatt led the team in scoring in the third quarter. The Devils pressed, stole, and scored the ball from Catholic’s guards all night. The score was 40-25 at the start of the fourth.
The Devils finished the game with a 10 point lead, 56-46. Darrion Wimsatt finished with 19 points. Sophomore Amari Wales added 17 points, and Freshman Gavin Wimsatt had 10 points.
The Devils had four of eight players on the All-District Team. Sophomore Amari Robinson-Wales, Junior Jaiden Greathouse, Freshman Gavin Wimsatt, and Senior Darrion Wimsatt were all on the team.
Senior Darrion Wimsatt took home the 9th District Player of the Year Award.
Our Owensboro Red Devils battle the Meade County Green Wave Tuesday, February 26 at 6:00 PM at the 3rd Region Tournament at the Sportscenter. After that round, the Devils play the winner of Muhlenberg County and Edmonson County.
