It has been a long three years for the Lady Devils soccer team. They’ve fought hard with every battle they have come across and have had their fair share of defeat. But for the first time since 2015, they defeated Apollo’s Lady E-Gals 2-1 in double overtime.

There was an immense of leadership all across the board from Owensboro. There has been a lot of talk about how this team gels together very well and that would seem to be correct. The whole game was played very well defensively and offensively, including the defensive line.

Although Apollo scored within the first five minutes, Owensboro was not going down without a fair fight. Senior Emma Kingsley says “They were obviously a very competitive team, which they’ve always been. But at the end of the day, we showed out and they didn’t, so the city of Owensboro saw how well we can really play.”

Freshman Abby Beck scored in the 2nd half on a break away. Later on in the game with less than a minute left in double overtime, Alexis Westerfield had a phenomenal corner kick to Jasmine Sturgeon, heading the ball for the final goal. Sturgeon says, “With a game like that, it could have gone either way. But Owensboro came out on top by blocking every attacking force and that’s why we won.”

The Lady Devils also beat Breckenridge County 6-0 yesterday.

The Lady Devils will battle crosstown rival Owensboro Catholic at Dale Poole Field on Tuesday, August 28th with Junior Varsity beginning at 5:30 and Varsity beginning at 7:00.
