Owensboro Loses to South Warren in the Region Championship

After their spectacular win over Bowling Green the week before, the Owensboro Football team had high ambitions going into the Class 5A Region 1 Championship Game. They played South Warren on Friday, November 16th.

In the first quarter, South Warren came out fast to put some points on the scoreboard. Despite Owensboro’s defensive efforts, South Warren was able to score 3 touchdowns in the first quarter, leaving the score as 21-0.

Owensboro gained some momentum in the second quarter, however, as Monte Owsley(11) scored a 52-yard touchdown after a pass from Will Warren(12). Grayson McFarland(11) was able to convert the PAT. South Warren scored two more touchdowns in the second quarter to end the half 35-7.

The second half was not quite as eventful as the first. In the third quarter, South Warren scored a 10-yard touchdown with 43 seconds left in the quarter. The conversion was failed. In the last quarter, no touchdowns were scored, but South Warren was able to make a field goal. The game ended 44-7.

Quarterback Will Warren(12) commented on the game: “Although it wasn’t the outcome we wanted, the team came out and gave it their all as a whole.”  

With this loss, the Devils ended their season. Owensboro’s football team had a great overall season, ending with a 10-3 record and a 4-0 record within the district. Also, Owensboro was ranked 17th in the state. The Devils had a total of 65 touchdowns, 4,752 offensive yards, and 645 tackles.

Will Warren(12) was voted the 2018 Red Devil of the Year with 3,279 passing years and 38 touchdowns. He currently holds the OHS record for passing yards in a season.
